At just 15 years old, Angela Zhou has already carved out a space for herself in the world of art. A rising junior in high school, Angela’s passion for art has been a defining aspect of her life since she was a child. "I started taking drawing lessons when I was 5 years old and am passionate about art to this day," she shares. Her early start in drawing laid the foundation for a deep and abiding love for visual expression.
A Love for Oil Painting
Five years ago, Angela discovered her love for oil painting, a medium that has since become her primary form of artistic expression. "I fell in love with oil painting about five years ago and thoroughly enjoy expressing myself through paintings," she says. This love for painting has driven her to explore a wide range of subjects and styles, allowing her to refine her skills and develop a unique voice in her work.
An Emerging Talent
In addition to her passion for painting, Angela has already made significant strides in the world of illustration. "I have illustrated several children's books," she notes, showcasing her ability to bring stories to life through her art. This early experience in illustration has undoubtedly contributed to her growth as an artist, providing her with opportunities to experiment with different techniques and styles.
But Angela’s creativity doesn’t stop at painting and illustration. She is also an avid crocheter, a skill she has turned into a small business. "I love to crochet and own a small business selling handmade crochet goods," she shares. This entrepreneurial spirit, combined with her artistic talents, demonstrates Angela’s dedication to pursuing her passions and sharing them with the world.
"Laboratory Study": A Tribute to Family
One of Angela’s most recent works, "Laboratory Study," is a deeply personal piece inspired by her mother, who is a chemistry professor. "This painting was created out of inspiration for my mother. She is a chemistry professor, so I painted her in her natural element," Angela explains. The painting captures a moment of peace amidst the controlled chaos of a laboratory, using various pieces of chemistry equipment as props to create a detailed and authentic setting.
Angela’s approach to this painting was meticulous and thoughtful. "I wanted to convey a feeling of peace amidst the cluttered environment," she says, describing her intent to balance the complexity of the scene with a sense of calm. The process of creating this piece was a labor of love for Angela. "I started this painting last summer. Though it took a while to complete, I have enjoyed painting every component of the piece," she reflects.
