Our Story

The Penn Journal of Arts & Sciences (PJAS) was founded in 2024 as an independent publication devoted to contemporary creative work. It brings together visual art, poetry, and writing in a format that moves easily between disciplines without treating them as separate categories.

PJAS publishes online at pjasmag.org throughout the year and releases four print issues annually. The print editions are more selective, shaped through an editorial process that favors work with a clear sense of form and direction.

The journal was founded by Sophie Kadan (University of Pennsylvania, Class of 2025), who serves as Editor-in-Chief. Her background in both art and research informs the publication’s approach: creative work is not presented alongside scholarship, but with the same weight and expectation.

PJAS continues to expand beyond the university, working with artists and writers whose practices feel considered, precise, and fully their own.
