Kimi Kuniyoshi’s journey into the world of art is one of self-discovery, resilience, and a deep exploration of life’s impermanence. Growing up, Kimi’s environment wasn’t traditionally steeped in art or literature. However, her passion for creativity was sparked by her own curiosities and experiences, particularly during childhood trips to Japan. "I discovered my passion for art through my own curiosities and experiences," she shares. These early encounters with creativity led her to experiment with oil pastels and explore different musical instruments, setting the foundation for a lifelong love of the arts.
As a solitary child, Kimi cherished her alone time, using it to create intricate oil pastel drawings of imaginary landscapes, which she called "Spacescapes." "These early artistic explorations were indicative of the deeper, lifelong connection I would form with art," she reflects. This connection was further nurtured by her formal education at St. John’s College, where she studied philosophy and ancient mathematics. "My education at St. John’s College profoundly influenced my artistic practice by immersing me in deep philosophical inquiries," Kimi explains. This academic background laid a solid foundation for the conceptual depth in her work, which she later translated into tangible forms through sculpture and painting at the College of Santa Fe.
Exploring Different Mediums and Themes
Kimi’s creative journey is marked by continuous experimentation with different genres, styles, and mediums. "I experiment with different genres and mediums to visually express my philosophical beliefs," she says. This exploration allows her work to remain dynamic and fresh, constantly evolving as she delves into new ideas and concepts. Recurring themes in her work revolve around impermanence, the transient nature of life, and capturing the essence of the present moment. "For me, these themes symbolize the ever-changing reality we live in," Kimi explains, drawing a parallel between her art and concepts in quantum physics, where observation can affect outcomes.
Kimi’s work is deeply influenced by a range of mentors and historical artists, including DeKooning, Sol Lewitt, Lee Krasner, Agnes Martin, Franz Kline, and Francis Bacon. "The mentorship I received helped me ground my abstract, conceptual ideas into visual forms," she notes. Each of these artists contributed to shaping her understanding of color, form, minimalism, and the psychological dimensions of art, which are evident in her current work.
A Resilient Creative Process
Kimi’s creative process is both disciplined and deeply personal. Her day begins early, with a five-hour studio session starting at 5 AM, often guided by a base color chosen by her spouse. "My typical day starts early, with a five-hour studio session from 5 AM to 10 AM," she says. This routine not only ensures productivity but also allows her to maintain a healthy balance between work and personal life. When faced with creative blocks, Kimi turns to meditation, reading, and unrestricted experimentation to rejuvenate her creativity.
One of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences in Kimi’s life was overcoming a severe workplace accident that forced her to leave her previous career. "During the years focused on my rehabilitation, I experienced profound introspection, which ultimately helped me emerge with a vibrant perspective on life and creativity," she shares. This transformative journey led her to embrace painting as her primary medium, allowing her to continue expressing her creativity despite physical limitations.

Looking ahead, Kimi is excited about the future of her work. She plans to continue evolving her unique style, blending abstract concepts from quantum physics into her art to spark both visual and intellectual interest. "Expanding my reach is also key," she adds, with plans to showcase her art in more exhibitions and seek representation from galleries.

Through these endeavors, Kimi hopes to continue sharing her work with a wider audience, creating meaningful connections, and leaving a lasting impact on the art world.
