Tradesmen’s Quilt

by Lauren Comerato

“I am a mixed media artist who creates sculptures which allow viewers to experience the domestic spaces that flank my memories. Using industrial building materials such as wires, tarps, and silicone caulking, paired with domestic fiber techniques like weaving, crocheting and beading, I emphasize the connection and tension between materials and memory. My creative process begins by reflecting on a critical personal memory anchored by a connection to a family member. Every thread, texture, and objects within these memories holds a story waiting to be told. The objects and materials I choose to work with are vessels carrying the weight of my familial history. The delicate doilies that adorned my grandmother's home are a physical representation of her warmth, while the rugged wire caps from my father's work truck evoke memories of toil and resilience. While creating these spaces and sculptures, I am transported back to the intangible moments that shaped me.”
