The Bond of Food

by Estella Yanquoi

“This is a painting I started based on my memories from when I was younger. Since I have been getting older I realize that I do not really remember much of my childhood. If I do remember, I usually remember things that weren’t so good. I like to pick pictures to paint that have good memories behind them. As I grow my little memory of the good times will fade, too, so I paint to remember them again. When I paint I feel like I remember more. It is not the same as looking at a picture, it feels like I am recreating that memory on the canvas. I think that is the main thing I love about art, I can paint, draw, etc. and it feels like I am getting old memories to last longer. This acrylic painting is of me and my cousins when we were younger. It is a photo my mom took of us eating all together African style.”
