Flipped; Spiraling; Ember Jan 14 Written By Sophie Kadan by Jessica Bednarcik “My current artwork explores and interrogates nostalgia, memory, and repetitive thought through reiteration of high saturation colors and allusion to space. My figurative oil paintings start with underpaintings that are alive, mimicking moments of fluorescence in nature. My process begins with this luminance which I then cover up, layer by layer. It explores the process of thought, constantly adding, layering, and revisiting memories. Through the lens of self-portraiture, the works explore the complexity of emotion that come with unrelenting changes of life. Lost in thought or movement, unaware of the surrounding real world, face and body still as the rhythm of the world moves around them. Surroundings fade into a void-like space. You get lost in the intense yellow glow, the warmth contrasting the coldness of such loneliness. Flowers leap from the sheets, creeping Viridian vines ascend the walls, and pastel brushstrokes swirl around the solitary still form.” Sophie Kadan
