Ethereal Embrace

by Whitney Leshay

“The medium I preferred for this piece was mixed media, ink, and acrylics on canvas. I used gestural, sweeping gestures, stippling, dabbing, and a washing technique while layering lighter colors over the more vibrant free-form and stippled acrylic on the canvas. My abstract paintings explore the tension between chaos and harmony, inviting viewers to engage with the depth of human emotion and experience. Each piece serves as a visual narrative, challenging conventional perceptions of beauty and evoking a sense of wonder. By utilizing bold colors and dynamic shapes, I aim to evoke emotional responses, prompting contemplation about the complexities of existence. The key themes in my work revolve around fragmentation and reconstruction, mirroring my journey through life's uncertainties. Each stroke represents a moment, an experience, or an emotion, layered together to create a cohesive whole. The interplay of light and shadow within the compositions signifies the duality of human nature, illustrating how beauty often arises from turmoil. On a deeply personal level, my art reflects my inner landscape. It embodies my struggles, dreams, and reflections on identity and resilience. The process of creation itself is therapeutic, serving as a conduit for my unexpressed feelings and thoughts. I view my artwork as a dialogue with the viewer, inviting them to interpret, reflect, and connect with their experiences. Ultimately, my art aims to inspire introspection and connection. I want to challenge viewers to embrace their vulnerabilities and recognize the beauty that can arise from their own experiences. Each piece is a testament to the human spirit's capacity to endure, transform, and derive meaning from moments of chaos, embodying a profound message of hope.”

My name is Whitney. I am a creative soul from the Midwest shaped by diverse cultures and artistic expressions. I take pride in being a mother, sister, and daughter, and I find joy in ice hockey and the thrill of uncertainty. I am pursuing a bachelor's degree in journalism and broadcasting, hoping to combine my writing skills with my passion for art. I draw inspiration from artists like Gertrude Abercrombie, Frida Kahlo, Jackson Pollock, Milagros Pongo, and Rocío Caballero. I find beauty in folk art—especially Mexican folk art, which often carries deep spiritual significance. My artwork draws inspiration from surrealism and abstract styles. I have been passionate about art, literature, history, and the unknown from a young age. I am drawn to the Golden Age of Hollywood, classic horror films, and the intense lives of tortured artists. The '90s evoke nostalgia and peace, and I am fascinated by how pain can inspire creativity. My love for writing and painting enables me to explore emotions and envision the future. Through both mediums, I have found my voice.
