Doorways; Luminescent Hallway

by Michelle Luther

“I work mainly in gouache and oil paint, and my subject matter consists of interior spaces and landscapes. I feel that individual spaces have a unique voice, and I cannot help but listen to them when they demand that I paint them. I engage in multiple drawing sessions, absorbing the essence of the spaces. I become engrossed in the forms and shapes that the colors take rather than just direct observation. Memory abstracts the scene, and I am left with a fusion of direct observation and an emotional interpretation. Light is a huge focus in my work. I depict light as an expressive force interacting within the space. These scenes have a pressurized feel to them because of light being restricted within one space. In my paintings I portray the aura of the spaces that hold my attention. Through composition and color relationships, I am able to convey the observational and emotional essence of these scenes.”
